According to a reports, Barack Obama's administration has deported a record number of illegal immigrants. As of September 30th, more than 392,000 people were deported due to illegal citizenship status. Of those 392,000 removed from the country, 45,000 were drug offenders, 1,000 were murders, 28,000 were drunk drivers, and 6,000 were sex offenders. This means that out of 392,000 illegal immigrants, 80,000 had run-ins with the law while in America. In more simplistic statistics, this means roughly 20% of illegal immigrants violated the law in addition to immigrating illegally.
Although 20% is not a good number by any means, it is certainly different from the stats presented in the media. When tuning into the local news or radio, you are lead to believe that almost half of the illegal immigrants coming to this country are criminals. After doing my own research, I'd be interested to compare the percentage of illegal immigrants with criminal records to that of US Citizens with criminal records. I doubt that the numbers would allude to illegal immigrants being more violent or reckless.
The truth of the matter is that in a large mass of people, there are always individuals that stray from the common desire to do good. We've seen this happen in school and nearly every aspect of life. I think it is unfair to use the misconduct of individual illegal immigrants to characterize the entire group. Although there obviously is a portion that come to the country and cause harm, it appears that most are simply coming to provide a better life for themselves and their families. As a society, we should embrace them without the notion that a majority of them are criminals, and help them in their pursuit of happiness.
I like the topic you have chosen and it is definitely a pressing issue in the media and political sphere. I agree with your point that we shouldn’t just kick all illegal immigrants out of America because like you said many are just trying to make a living. When Europeans came to America for the first time, they pillaged the land and killed many Indians but weren’t kicked out. However, now people are trying to come into America, a melting pot nation, and they are being deported. I think there are good and bad things about this. We should allow people to cross our boarders more often and not make the process of getting allowance so difficult. That way we can legally let them in and monitor them more effectively and then they will actually have to pay taxes which illegal aliens don’t do. However, at the same time we need to continue screening the people who get green cards and make sure they aren’t criminals. So basically I think we should let more people in so they don’t come illegally because it’s easier but still check each one for criminal behavior because 20% is a high number when talking about millions of people. Also I do believe we should patrol and protect our boarders more because that is where the majority of the criminals are coming from.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that we should let immigrants just walk into our country because only 20 percent of them are criminals. Im not ok with letting killers and drunk drivers into our country. There are people that come to our country for a better life and I think that that is an ok reason for coming to America. But I do not like the fact that thousands of illegal immigrants can just walk into our country as they please and not think that they have to follow our laws. Then when they are caught, tax dollars paid by the citizens of the country have to be used to send them back or to take care of them if they are injured. There are goods and bads to the immigration but I one thing that I don't like is when illegal immigrants come into our country and disrespect it. They already illegally came into the country and now they start causing problems and getting arrested. I don't understand it.
ReplyDelete@ Houston Brown, you make very good points. I am 100% behind the screening of people before they enter the country.
ReplyDelete@ snap crackle and pop, I completely understand your stance. Nobody likes a criminal. Referencing 20% in my post wasn't to say "if only 20% of them are criminals it's okay", but to say that most of these illegal immigrants are not looking to harm American society.
